|Bringing Back Holleywood||
first family reunion
We had a wonderful week with visiting family from Boston, Ohio, Kentucky and Dallas who proved that the house is indeed made for a crowd. Most popular features of the house for the kids were tower top, bell butler and crawlspace closet in hallway.
A deep, dry well was discovered while resetting stone steps from the kitchen porch. Rob went down to look for buried treasure. Nada. Perhaps well was used to collect overflow from the cistern? The hole is now filled and you'd never know it was there.
front page news
Thanks to Cynthia Hochswender, editor of The Lakeville Journal, for taking an interest in Holleywood. She came over and did a wonderful photo series and writeup, in advance of our opening the house to benefit Scoville Library, and honored us further with front page coverage.
Donald and Rob were born on the same day, a few (ahem) years apart. We celebrate their birthday with cake in the almost-done kitchen.
A century of grime is scraped off floorboards in kitchen and breakfast room, revealing beautiful wood which we believe was installed during the 1860 renovation.
The Zordan brothers, third-generation plasterers, are moving into the kitchen next week and the area is aflurry with preparations. The original bell butler is dismantled and covered with plastic to protect it during the process. So house guests will be able to ring me for service.
It's arrived!! All one piece of soapstone and so heavy it required the strength of six guys to haul it in.
The cabinets are vintage wood, to make it look like they've always been there. The crown is designed to echo cabinetry in the butler's pantry. The subway tiles are vintage stock, but can't be older than 1904 when the first NYC subway was built.
who we are
We are a couple of Upper West Siders from NYC who never set out to buy an old mansion in Connecticut. But the moment we walked through its massive front door, we were smitten. The info on this site is earnestly cobbled from a variety of sources, including the web. Please let us know if we've gotten something wrong, or if there's a story about Holleywood you'd like to share.
